EOPS

Counseling

When you are accepted into EOPS, you are assigned a counselor who will be available to you throughout the duration of your participation in the program. You are required to see your counselor three times a semester to ensure that you are receiving whatever help you may need to make progress toward your educational goals.

Counselors can assist you with:

  • Academic, vocational, and personal counseling
  • The financial aid process
  • Class scheduling
  • Petitions to the Academic Council
  • Petitions for A.A./A.S. degree
  • Graduation applications
  • Referrals to other student services and/or community agencies
  • Other information vital to your success in college

Llael Valle
Llael is a Marriage and Family Therapist and clinical supervisor. She previously worked in the field of community mental health and also taught graduate courses at CSU, Chico. She received her undergraduate degree from UC, Davis and earned her graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from CSU, Chico.  Llael is passionate about working with students to help them reach educational, cultural, social, economic, and personal success. She believes in the potential of every person and excels in providing them with academic and personal guidance in an equitable, inclusive and respectful manner.

Doua Thao
Doua Thao has served as a Retention Specialist at Butte College for over three years with the Basic Skills Student Outcome Transformation Grant and Homeless and Housing Insecurity Pilot Project. Doua’s career experiences has mostly been around working with students in higher education, which has led to his passion in continuing his work in helping and supporting students through their college career. Doua graduated at CSU, Chico with a BA in Sociology and MA in Applied Psychology.

Kia Vang
Kia is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has worked with at-risk-youth and disadvantaged families since 2009. She grew up in Oroville and received both her Bachelors and Masters of Social Work degrees at California State University, Chico. As a child of Hmong refugees, Kia was a first generation college student and an EOP student at CSU, Chico. Due to her personal and professional experiences, Kia is passionate about helping underserved students pursue their goals and dreams.

Mayra Vargas-Rivera

Mayra first learned about EOPS when she attended Yuba College. She was a first generation college student, who came from a poor, immigrant family and because of her needs became part of EOPS. Her hard work earned her a place as an EOPS Peer Counselor. During her attendance at Yuba College, she worked with other programs such as, Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search (ETS), and Student Support Services (SSS). Mayra transferred to CSU, Sacramento and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and a Master in Science in Counseling. She has been working as a Counselor since 2013. Throughout the years, she gained experience working with EOPS, General Counseling, and CalWORKs at Yuba College. In addition, she worked with the Transfer Center and General counseling here at Butte College.  Mayra is very excited to work with our EOPS student population, and looks forward to meeting you!
